North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM) is a premier institute for Land and Water Management in the North Eastern Region of India. It was established by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) as a society registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860. This institute has been transferred to the Ministry of, Government of India, on 1st April, 2012.

The Institute caters to all the states of North Easter Region viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura in capacity building in the fields related to natural resource management, irrigation water management, in-situ water conservation of rainwater, water harvesting, bio-engineering measures for soil conservation and eco-restoration, micro-irrigation, organic farming, amelioration of groundwater contamination, etc. Stakeholders include Government Officials/ Professionals of the Department of Water Resources, Irrigation, Agriculture, Horticulture, Soil & Water Conservation, Rural Development, Water Users Associations (WUAs) of irrigation commands, under-graduate students of engineering of NE Region, farmers, Self Help Groups (SHGs) and NGOs.

Keeping the pace of technological and economic development of the country, the institute has been continuously trying to expand its horizon in the field of capacity building incorporating regional, national and international issues related to land and water management. It has been organizing international training specially to the officials of Government of Royal Bhutan and international seminars. NERIWALM has been identified as the Nodal Agency for National Water Mission and also coordinated to prepare State Specific Action Plan (SSAP) in water sector for 12 states viz. Assam, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Uttarkhand, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Telengana in the 1st phase and remaining NE States (excluding Assam) in the 2nd phase. Base Line Studies for Water Use Efficiency of four irrigation projects namely Pohumara, Koliabor, Sukla and Rupahi in Assam and Loktak project in Manipur have been taken up by NERIWALM.

Concurrent evaluation of 21 minor irrigation projects in Assam under AIBP has also been completed by NERIWALM. New initiatives in water and soil testing, promotion of micro-irrigation, floriculture and organic farming have been made. The institute has also well equipped laboratories in Soil and Water, GIS and Remote Sensing and Computation along with Smart Class Rooms, Agro-Meteorological Observatory and Library. The Ministry of Jal Shakti also extends supports for Field Trips and hands-on-training for all the stake-holders.
