.......has made its mark as a premier  institute of Northern Region of India in the area of land and water management. Initially the institute was under the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of Home Affairs and subsequently to Ministry of DoNER, Government of India and  transferred to the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation,  Government  of India on 1st April, 2012.

The Institute primarily provides capacity building support in all the area of natural resources management irrigation water management, in situ conservation of rain water, water harvesting, dry land farming , engineering and bio intervention for soil conservation and eco restoration, micro irrigation, organic farming, amelioration of ground water contamination  etc.. Clientele includes professionals / Government officials of the Departments of Irrigation , Water Resources , Agriculture & Horticulture, Soil & Water Conservation, Rural Development etc. of NER States, namely, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, ,   Water Userís  Associations (WUAs) of irrigation commands, undergraduate engineering students of NE Region, self Help Groups (SHG)and NGOs. On requests made by the states like Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur for special courses for field functionaries and farmers under Prime Minister Krishi Sinchayee  Yojana (PMKSY) has also been  taken up.

NERIWALM is the Nodal Agency of National Water Mission (NWM) and has been identified to get the State  Specific Action Plan (SSAP) for water sector prepared by 12 states, viz. Assam, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisa, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Gujrat, Tamil Nadu and Telengana  in the 1st phase  and 7 North-Eastern states viz. Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Nagaland , Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the 2nd phase.  Base Line Studies  for Water Use Efficiency of four  Irrigation Projects   viz. Pohumara, Kaliabor, Sukla and Rupahi in Assam and one project viz. Loktak in Manipur have been taken up by NERIWALM. Concurrent Evaluation of 21 minor irrigation projects of Assam under  AIBP has also been completed  by NERIWALM.

New initiatives in soil testing for farmers, volumetric measurement of irrigation water in the fields and promotion of organic farming have been made.  The Class Room, Computer Laboratory, Soil and Water Testing Laboratory, Research Farm, Library, Agro-meteorology Station etc. of NERIWALM are equipped with the latest required facilities.  Field trips and hands-on training is always encouraged by the Institute and the Ministry of Water Resources, RD & GR has been kind enough to extend full support in all its endeavour.
